Dancing Couple (A Party) is a beautiful oil on canvas painting that exemplifies Botero’s fascination with whimsical forms. A voluptuous rotund couple is twirling amid a party crowd of dancers and musicians. Botero renders the partygoers and their musical instruments, an accordion, guitars, and flutes, in his signature technique of ‘Boterismo.’ The exaggerated figures and objects are sites of experimentation, as they allow Botero to apply more color with a sensuality and profusion of form. The dancing partners are the focus, with the brilliant red-haired woman in a bright blue polka-dot dress being twirled by a mustachioed man in a brown jacket. Botero masterfully creates a composition full of motion, movement, and excitement with exuberant colors and careful forms of human positions, a method also seen in his other dancing works, A Party, Pas de Deux, and Ballerini.

The whimsical proportions of the dancers are mirrored in Botero’s bronze sculptures of people and animals, such as Woman on Horse and Maternity. Botero’s monumental public sculptures can be found on the streets of New York and Paris, among others. His mastery of voluptuous fleshy figures has become his trademark style and is immediately recognizable as Botero’s creations around the world.
