Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana. He adopted his birth state as his artist surname early in his career. Indiana's compositions consist of bold, simple, iconic images and the use of bright contrasting colors. He has been a prominent figure in American art since the 1960’s. His exquisite and bold works of assemblage art, hard edge abstraction and pop art has solidified him as an internationally revered artist.

Indiana created a Christmas Card for MOMA in 1964 which first featured his famous LOVE design. LOVE has become an icon of 20th century art In 1973 the United States Postal Service used Indiana’s design for a postage stamp. The LOVE configuration also became sculptures in public places such as Love Park, Philadelphia in the US and a similar sculpture of the word HOPE edition was placed in the Israel Museum located in Jerusalem, Israel.
